On Friday, January 10, a female prisoner named Fatemeh Lotfi-42- set herself on fire in Langarud Prison, Qom, in protest against her prolonged uncertainty and lack of resolution regarding her case. Instead of transferring her to a burn center, prison officials sent her to a psychiatric hospital. On the evening of Saturday, January 11, Farzaneh Bijanipour, a prisoner held in Ward 6 of Qarchak Prison, passed away due to the prison doctor’s refusal to provide adequate medical care. Prison authorities prevented her transfer to external medical facilities. Reports indicate that political prisoner Maryam Akbari Monfared has been denied in-person visits with her husband since her transfer to Qarchak Prison and continues to be held in solitary confinement. Hossein Taj, the lawyer representing Maryam Akbari Monfared, stated, “My client, after completing her 15-year prison sentence without a single day of furlough, was transferred from exile in the Prison of Semnan to Qarchak Prison to serve an additional two-year sentence. He added, “Although her husband obtained a court order from the prosecutor’s office permitting visitation, prison officials claim that an inquiry to the Civil Registry failed to verify their marital status. On Jan. 8, a group of male and female political prisoners detained in Evin, Ghezel Hesar (Karaj), Lakan (Rasht), and Greater Tehran prisons has issued an open letter urging international organizations and institutions to use their full capacity to take effective action to halt the execution of three political prisoners: Pakhshan Azizi, Mehdi Hassani, and Behrouz Ehsani.
