The US Department of State's 2021 Country report
on Human Rights Practices was released on April 13, 2022. One of the parts of the report focuses on the situation of political prisoners and detainees, including the case of the Iranian political prisoner Maryam Akbari-Monfared. “In March, as reprisal for signing an open letter accusing the government of routinely denying medical care to prisoners, authorities transferred Maryam Akbari-Monfared from Evin Prison to a prison 124 miles away from her family. “Akbari-Monfared had been imprisoned for nearly 12 years for seeking justice for her siblings, who were disappeared and extrajudicially executed in secret in 1988 in Iran. The US Department of State’s 2021 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Iran also asserts that lawyers who defended political prisoners were often arrested, detained, and subjected to excessive sentences and punishments for engaging in regular professional activities. The government continued to imprison lawyers.

Mahsa Kamali, a member of the Iranian women’s national futsal team, was dismissed for opposing the war with Ukraine. Ms. Kamali was earlier summoned to the disciplinary committee for declaring her opposition to Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. On April 10, Mahsa Kamali stated that when the technical staff did not invite her to play on the team, she was upset and had not expected it. Mahsa said it affected her very badly. Mahsa continued that after she was not invited to two- or three women’s national futsal team camps and had asked why, the technical staff placed the reason on “youthfulness.” Futsal is an indoor soccer game.

Halimeh Parhiz, a 27-year-old woman from Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province in Iran, was set on fire by her husband. He wanted to force her to abort their 5-month-old fetus. Honor killings in Iran is on the rise because the punishment is non existence. This young woman was a resident of Zilaei village in this province and a mother of three children. She was pregnant with her fourth child but murdered by her husband for refusing to abort her baby.
