The city of Hamedan of Hamedan province Western Iran, witnessed large-scale and impassioned protests on Wednesday, July 2, after the brutal killing of two young off-road motorcyclists, Mehdi Abaa’i and Alireza Karbasi, by an armed Basij militia member at an unauthorized checkpoint. On Thursday July 3, hundreds, including many women, gathered for the funeral procession of the victims, chanting openly anti-regime slogans and voicing their outrage over the escalating repression, violence, and injustice. The protest quickly transformed into a broader expression of public dissent against the regime’s systemic brutality. Women, particularly young girls and university-aged women, played a leading role in the demonstrations. They defiantly shouted anti-government slogans with striking courage. Images from the streets of Hamedan show women confronting state violence head-on, demanding justice and accountability for the killings. In the early hours of Tuesday, July 1, the Gonich village, located in Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan, was the target of a violent and large-scale military assault by the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other security forces of the Iranian regime. The raid began at 5am and involved dozens of armored vehicles, aerial surveillance by military drones, and the deployment of heavily armed ground units. The operation was launched despite the complete absence of men in the village—only women and children were present at the time. Several days after the 25 year old political prisoner Arghavan Fallahi was transferred from Ward 209 of Evin Prison in Iran to an undisclosed location, her exact whereabouts and condition remain unclear. In a brief phone call on June 29, she told her family that she is being kept in solitary confinement but does not know where she is being held. She speculated that she might be in Qarchak Prison in Varamin. Behnaz Mahjoubi, the sister of Behnam Mahjoubi—a Gonabadi dervish who died in custody in February 2021- was arrested by Iranian security forces in the city of Kerman on Saturday, June 28, 2025, and transferred to an undisclosed location. Batoul Hosseini, Behnaz Mahjoubi’s mother, confirmed the arrest in a statement and said the family remains in the dark about her daughter’s condition and location. Behnam Mahjoubi, her brother, was arrested following the 2018 crackdown on the Gonabadi dervishes at Golestan-e Haftom in Tehran. Solmaz Abbasi, a 43-year-old volleyball coach and newly hired schoolteacher, was brutally murdered by her husband on Saturday, June 28, 2025, in her lawyer’s office in Urmia, capital of the West Azerbaijan Province in Iran. She was stabbed with a knife 21 times in a gruesome act of violence. The killing occurred while Solmaz Abbasi was in the process of finalizing her divorce after a history of domestic abuse. In yet another tragic case of femicide in Iran, Mahboubeh Delavari, a 42-year-old teacher residing in the city of Abdanan in Ilam Province, was killed by her husband on Sunday, June 22.
